RB Silent Tread™
Sound Reduction Underlayment
Quiet and Comfortable for the Life of your Floor
Product Summary:
What is RB Silent-Tread Sound Reduction Underlayment?
RB Silent-Tread is an acoustical underlayment designed
to dramatically reduce room-to-room and in-room ambient noise. RB
Silent-Tread exceeds national building code and property association
sound reduction requirements. RB Silent-Tread is the
superior choice for High-Rises, Office Buildings, Hotels, Multi-Family
Homes or just for the personal comfort of the homeowner.
Easy and fast to install, not only does RB Silent-Tread
help reduce minor sub-floor imperfections, it lies flat. Versatile to
use with most floor constructions, concrete or wood, and surfaces of laminate,
hardwood, engineered wood and tile. RB Silent-Tread provides
a 20-year Limited Lifetime Warranty - regardless
of flooring brand or type of floor* when installed correctly.
In head-to-head sound testing, RB Silent-Tread outperformed
the competition. RB Silent-Tread’s dense recycled
rubber granules provide superior compression resistance so you can enjoy
its benefits much longer than with most other underlayments.
Why is Underlayment So Important?
“Your floor is only as good as the surface it is installed over.”
Recent innovations in laminate, hardwood, engineered wood and tile continue
to exhibit the “hollow” or “pingy” sound with
foot traffic, voices, radio, TV, etc. When RB Silent-Tread
is the underlayment of choice, RB Silent-Tread absorbs
the sound waves inside the room and blocks other sound transmission to
the room below.
RB Silent-Tread incorporates antimicrobial additive to inhibit the growth of mold, bacteria
and algae. RB Silent-Tread XL (with vapor barrier) dissipates
moisture, reducing potential harm to the flooring above and the subfloor
below*.
RB Silent-Tread is fabricated from thousands of small
rubber granules and offers superior underfoot comfort for standing, walking
or exercising. The weight and durability of RB Silent-Tread
allows RB Rubber to provide a limited warranty for the life of the floor.
Other underlayments fail to provide the firmness necessary to resist compression
from foot traffic and/or heavy furniture.
* Always follow flooring manufacturer’s written
installation instructions. RB Silent-Tread XL (with vapor
barrier) or other waterproof membrane should be used when installing over
new concrete or concrete at or below grade level and wherever the flooring
manufacturer recommends a vapor barrier. Waterproof membranes, if any,
should be facing up toward the flooring surface. If moisture exceeds flooring
manufacturer’s specifications, follow their installation procedures
for moisture control.

Summary Install Instructions**
Floating Floor
- Check for subfloor moisture content. Always consult the flooring manufacturer’s
written installation instructions, particularly with regard to moisture
protection practices*. In most instances RB Silent-Tread XL
(with vapor barrier) will meet the flooring manufacturer’s requirements.
- Be certain the subfloor is clean, dry, smooth, level and structurally
sound. Ensure that any nail heads are flush, smooth out any other sharp
subfloor protrusions and fill any holes, gaps or indentions.
- Starting in a corner, unroll RB Silent-Tread over
the subfloor. RB Silent-Tread should be laid out perpendicular
to the finished surface flooring to reduce seams.
- Fit the perimeter edge at least ¼” from the wall by cutting
to size. Roll out the next underlayment row in the same manner while
butting each roll seam together tightly. Do not allow peaking or overlapping
of seams.
- Make certain there are no attachments or penetrations through RB
Silent-Tread. If any, seal all tears or penetrations using
duct tape or other utility grade, poly-coated cloth backed tape with
an aggressive adhesive.
- With RB Silent-Tread XL (with vapor barrier), tape
all underlayment seams, tears, or penetrations using duct tape or other
utility grade, poly-coated cloth backed tape with an aggressive adhesive.
- Install the surface flooring according to the flooring manufacturer’s
written installation instructions.
Glue-Down Floor
- Consult the flooring manufacturer’s written installation instructions*.
Be certain the subfloor is clean, dry, smooth, level and structurally
sound. Ensure that any nail heads are flush, smooth out any other sharp

- Starting in a corner, unroll RB Silent-Tread over
the subfloor. RB Silent-Tread should be laid out perpendicular
to the finished surface flooring to reduce seams.
- Fit the perimeter edge at least 1/8” from the wall by cutting
to size. Roll out the next underlayment row in the same manner while
butting each roll seam together tightly. Do not allow peaking or overlapping
of seams.
- Remove fitted sections making sure to note their location in the installation.
- Starting in the farthest corner of the room, apply adhesive using
a 1/8” x 1/16” x 1/8” V-notch trowel, making sure
there is full coverage of the adhesive over the subfloor. Spread the
adhesive at right angles to the seams in order to prevent oozing. Approved
adhesive for gluing RB Silent-Tread must be polyurethane
based, do not use petroleum based adhesives.
- Follow immediately with RB Silent-Tread underlayment
making sure the adhesive is still open, and apply even and full pressure
to assure a full bond between the adhesive and RB Silent-Tread.
Use a 50+ pound roller to ensure proper adhesive transfer rolling the
width and then the length.
- Make certain there are no attachments or penetrations through RB
Silent-Tread. If any, seal all tears or penetrations using
duct tape or other utility grade, poly-coated cloth backed tape with
an aggressive adhesive.

manufacturer’s specifications, follow their installation procedures
for moisture control.
** Always follow RB Silent-Tread’s
detailed installation instructions.
